Your Novice AE Wildcats brought home OMHA Gold and the beloved Red Hats last night with a big game 6 win! The team entered the Finals as the "underdog" against the first place Peterborough Petes but showed everyone how far they have come this season. Four out of the first five games went to overtime and game 5 ended in a tie, sending the teams to a spirited game 6 on the team's lucky rink - Pad 4 at Iroquois. The rink was done up with Petes and Wildcats signs and a huge crowd showed up for both sides, setting the stage to name the champs.
The coaching staff has been preaching 17/3 for much of the season - all 17 players giving 100% for all 3 periods. The boys did exactly that in game 6, with every player putting in their best effort of the season. The final result was a huge 3-0 win, the "One More Win" the boys had so eagerly been rallying for. A regulation win was also a big relief to all of the team's fans who had endured five out of the previous six games going to OT...
This season was simply as good as it gets for this team and their families, and exemplified everything that is great about kids and sports...Coach Paul put having fun above all else from the first team meeting last June all the way to the end...the coaching was second to none and the boys responded in spades...every family was actively involved. In the end, perhaps the best part about winning the OMHAs is there will now be a permanent record for this team's season.
Number 6? This team had a few superstitions over the season but one always went unspoken. None of the players selected a number 6 in their jersey number this season. Perhaps it paid off as in Game 6 they came up with their best game of the season. And, as the last WMHA team still contesting for Red Hats, they capped off the season with WMHA's 6th OMHA title in 2015-16, a tremendous season.
