Peter Mancuso Champions 2017
The Minor Atom “A” Blue hockey team headed up the QEW to defend their title in Niagara Falls at the Peter Mancuso Challenge over this past weekend. In game 1 the boys were faced playing a familiar team in Quinte but even though the game was early Friday morning the boys were able to come out on top 3 – 0. Game 2 the boys didn’t know what to expect with our next opponent as we played the Vaughn Wolverines, we have never seen them before but the boys were up for the challenge giving up only 3 shots on goal and winning the contest 10 – 0. Game 3 was vs Newmarket, an old familiar face as we had lost to them earlier this season but the boys really dug down deep and played like a team and came out victorious with a 4 – 2 final.

As these boys punched their ticket into the semi finals on Sunday that wasn’t the most exciting part of the day. That was when the boys got to have breakfast and hear an hour of amazing stories from a hockey legend and Hall of Famer in “Marcel Dionne”. At his restaurant “The Blue Line Diner” in Niagara Marcel sat the boys down and told story after story, took pictures, signed pucks and memorabilia and gave these boys and our teams families a day to remember.

After a nice long family day on Saturday, the boys got up Sunday morning ready to rock facing North Toronto in the semi Finals. North Toronto were a tough opponent, they matched us up and down the ice and gave us a great game but with great goal tending from Sammy Bliss and an open net goal to solidify the game from Christian Luciano the team was off the Finals with a 3 – 1 victory.  We were now facing the Duffield Devils for the tournament championships.

The Devils came into this game with a 4 – 0 record and had scored 27 goals and only had given up 1 against going into this contest. But this didn’t scare the Wildcats, they were more resilient than ever, playing both ends of the rink, strong D from all 6 boys and great goaltending from Jack Vickery kept this a 2 – 2 game heading into the final 5 minutes of play. These Wildcats just kept firing pucks at the Devils goaltender (27 to be exact) and finally off a faceoff to the right of the goalkeeper, a great faceoff win by Lincoln Wright back to our D and some quick thinking to notice the goaltender was out of position Kaillen Taylor took the shot from the point and netted us the game winner. Once again giving the title of Peter Mancuso Champions for a second year straight.  On behalf of the coaching staff, we couldn’t be happier for these players.

It was a well-deserved outcome and we are all looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring.
