Minor PeeWee AA White are the Chatham Regional Silver Stick Champs!
The Whitby Wildcats Minor PeeWee AA White team travelled to Chatham this past weekend to play in the Chatham Regional Silver Stick Tournament. Despite missing one of our goalies for the entire tournament due to illness and having to stay in London and make an hour trek each day, the team went a resounding 5-0 on their way to capturing the Silver Stick Regional Championship.

The Wildcats started off the tournament with a game against the Windsor Spitfires, capturing their first win with a 5-2 score on Friday.

Next up was a Saturday morning showdown against the Belle River Jr. Canadiens. Despite a slow start, the Wildcats entered the 3rd period with a 2-1 lead only to see the Canadiens tie it up at the halfway point of the period. The Wildcats fought back, scoring with a little over two minutes remaining to win 3-2.

The final game of the Round Robin pitted the Wildcats against the West Niagara Flying Aces with 1st place on the line. Despite dominating for most of the game, the Wildcats squeaked out a 2-1 win to finish 1st in the round robin.

In the tournament semifinals, the Wildcats squared off in a rematch against the Spitfires. Facing a hot goaltender, the Wildcats entered the third period tied 0-0 despite their unrelenting pressure in the Spitfires zone. Windsor took a 1-0 lead, scoring 10 seconds into the game’s final frame only to see the Wildcats square it up a little over a minute later. Although they spent almost the entire period in the offensive end, the Wildcats didn’t come away with the game winner until there was just under a minute remaining.

With the tournament championship on the line, the Wildcats squared off against the hometown Kent Cobras. With the parking lot spilling over due to the number of Kent fans in the stands, the Wildcats parents recruited the Centre Wellington Fusion Bantam AE players, who helped rally the Whitby squad. The Wildcats opened the scoring with two minutes left in the first period, before quieting the rowdy Kent fans with three goals in a three minute span in the second period. A dominating defensive performance in the third period allowed Wildcats to bring home a 4-0 win and the Silver Stick title, plus an opportunity to play in the Silver Stick Finals in mid-January.
