Matthew was a part of the Whitby Minor Hockey Association from 2009, when he played Tyke, until the 2019-2020 season. Matthew was the captain of the 2019-2020 U16 AAA Wildcats and recorded 26 goals and 42 assists for 68 points in 36 games that season, leading the league in assists. He was drafted 12th overall in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection by the Guelph Storm, and 54th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2022 NHL Draft. Matthew finished his OHL career with a great 2022-23 season, recording 16 goals and 79 assists for 95 points in 63 games.
