Select 6 Eastman, 2015-2016, Rep (Whitby Minor Hockey)

The Whitby Wildcats Tyke Select 6 Eastman team were crowned champions on Sunday afternoon at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ontario after beating the Markham Waxers 6 - 2 in convincing fashion!

There was about two minutes to play in the playoff game and I was pacing behind the bench anxiously, barking out whatever instructions seemed important at that very moment. You watch the game and you watch the clock in those final seconds, often at the very same time.Our team was up by a goal, poised to advance to the next round of the playoffs, when I felt a tug on my jacket...

As our little ones enter into game play this weekend (both in House League and in Rostered Select hockey), I thought it might be helpful to discuss the 'off-side' rule with our children and any parents that are new to the game of hockey... A MUST READ FOR PARENTS This letter was sent by a player who received it from his father, and was originally published nearly three years ago.  The player said one thing before attaching the letter; “this is what its all about.”  For those Fathers, Sons, and Moms going through their last season of junior hockey, or those experiencing their first season, I think that this is something that all of us will one day wish we have written to our sons and/or daughters:

Effective Communication Great coaches are great communicators Effective communication is a key to coaching success and the doorway to connecting with your players! Enthusiasm Remember that it’s difficult to find enthusiasm from your players if you aren’t showing any yourself. A passionate and enthusiastic coach will energize players and help make their time at the rink more enjoyable.  Your players won’t just feel that enthusiasm. Parents will appreciate your interest in teaching their kids and will be more enthused to help out.
