Welcome to the 2017-2018 Hockey Season
Submitted By Jaclyn Morden on Thursday, September 7, 2017
  President’s Message

Welcome back to another great season of hockey.  The 2017-2018 season is shaping up to be one of our most exciting to date.  I am Vince Carere, your WMHA President for this season.  I have been in my role since June 2017, and it has been a busy summer, getting ready for the season.  I have been involved with the WMHA for seven years now, and this is my second year on the Board.

Last year I sat on the House League Committee.   Before that, and still to this day, I have been on the bench with my son’s house league team.  My focus has been, and always will be, on the players of this Association. I am very cognizant of the role this Association plays in our community and will strive to continue to foster these important connections.

See you around the rink!

Thank you to our 2016-2017 Board Members

We would like to thank the following past Board members for their countless hours of volunteering for this association over their tenure.

·         Rob Keast (President);

·         Jose Camacho (OMHA Contact);

·         Yvonne Zee (Secretary/Registrar);

·         Nora Burns (Rep AA Director);

·         Paul Frizado (AE/MD Director);

·         Steve Gray (House League Coordinator);

·         Andy Bruce (Tyke House League Director);

·         Jeremy Lane (Minor/Major Bantam House League Director); and

·         Bill Sandiford (Rostered Select/Novice Director).

Mission of the Association……..A Reminder for All of Us

The purpose of the WMHA is to organize, develop and promote minor ice hockey for the youth of the Town of Whitby including:

a) the opportunity for all eligible individuals, given availability, to participate in recreational house league ice hockey, and to provide community based programs, which will allow a player to participate in an environment for fun, physical exercise and fair play;

b) the development of and participation in representative ice hockey and provide the opportunity to participate at the highest competitive level;

c) to instil in all players, team officials, game officials and members associated with the WMHA good sportsmanship, correct and proper behaviour on and off the ice, respect for authority and team play;

d) the Association shall be operated without the purpose of pecuniary gain to any of the Members and any surplus or accretions of the Association shall be used

Goals and Objectives for the 2017-2018 Season

We have set some lofty goals for this season, in addition to getting over 2,500 players on the ice.  We will check in with you on our progress over the next few months.

·         Improving Efficiencies – In past years we have ended up paying for ice that we didn’t end up using as an organization for house league, or being able to release it to representative teams.  We are aiming to greatly reduce the incidence of “lost ice”

·         Improving Communication with our Members – Over the last two years we have upp’ed our presence on social media and want to continue this.  We also are aiming to have more regular communication with our members, thereby improving accountability

·         Increasing Volunteerism – you know what they say, “many hands make light work”.  We want to attract more volunteers to the organization, and recognize/celebrate our long-standing volunteers in a meaningful way.  Stay tuned!

·         Setting a Road Map for the Future of the Association – Once the season is up and running, we will be soliciting volunteers for a Long-Range Planning Committee that will help develop a long range plan for the WMHA.

Our Roles in the Association

The Board of Directors and Executive Committee (made up of President, VPs, Treasurer and Registrar) are to govern the Association in compliance with the objects, powers, by-laws and Policies of the Association, and all applicable laws and regulations.  We are charged with making the important and tough decisions that guide the Association.

The Representative Committee operates our Representative Hockey Program pursuant to the policies of the Association – from AE to AAA and from MD7 up to Juvenile.

The House League Committee operates our House League Hockey Programs from Initiation to Midget-Juvenile in accordance with the policies of the Association.

Our Convenors for each House League Age Group act as the conduit of information between the House League Directors and the bench staff, as well as help with day-to-day execution of the program.

Our Bench Staff are playing an important role – they are delivering our program on-ice for our players.  They are the unsung heroes of our organization!

Our parents and guardians need to be our cheerleaders, and our supporters.  We are accountable for getting our players to the rink on time, for them being prepared, and for supporting our players in a respectful manner!

Over the course of the year, if you have any comments or concerns, we encourage you to address them with your coach, then convenor, or Board Director first.  WMHA wants to empower our team officials and Board members at all levels.

Respect in Sport

Just a reminder that the Respect in Sport program is about empowering parents to ensure the safety of their children, encourage positive and effective communication, and to enhance a child’s fun and camaraderie of the activity.

The program is mandatory for all parents/guardians of players (under the age of 18 years) registering for the 2017-2018 season.  No player (under the age of 18 years) will be rostered to ANY team (Representative/House League) until this program has been undertaken by a parent/guardian.
