Gender Identity and Expression Communication
Submitted By Sandra Perfetti on Monday, October 1, 2018
Whitby is a community that takes pride in its culture and diversity. It is a multi-cultural community that embraces its residents and provides an environment of acceptance. As a community we are often quick to extend a helping hand in times of need. Whitby is a special place.

In early August this year the Ontario Hockey Federation in conjunction with the OMHA reached out to all associations requesting that we all reach out to our membership focusing on the inclusiveness and respect of all individuals

This message was based on a series of events that transpired in prior months based on an incident involving gender identification and diversity. While gender diversity and expression is an area of concern, the need to respect other aspects of society is equally as important.

Creating a culture and environment based on respect and inclusiveness is everyone’s responsibility not just that of WMHA. We must all work together to create and build out this culture. Parents and players should have an environment to come forward and openly discuss and express concerns and needs as they arise.

Whitby Minor Hockey believes that each registered player has a right to be respected and treated equally and to enjoy an environment in hockey that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Our core principles and values are anchored in the belief that where there is respect and Inclusiveness there is understanding and support The application of these core values at all times ensures that participants, regardless of their race, religion, gender orientation can participate in an environment that is safe and acceptable

Our Commitment

WMHA is committed to the safety of its membership. Whitby Minor Hockey acknowledges that there may be times when there is a need to provide accommodations to address a need.

We openly encourage parents and players to come forward and discuss any concerns. If an accommodation is required; the association will work diligently with the player, the parents and coaches to ensure not only that the player is safe but that concerns related to inclusiveness and respect are also maintained.

Video & Communication from OHF & OMHA

The OHF and OMHA have also provided the association with brief video in relation to this topic. We are asking all families and members of the association to review the video given the sensitivity.
