Novice and below (DS6 and DS7) Programming for 2019-20
Submitted By Sandra Perfetti on Thursday, December 13, 2018
The Ontario Minor Hockey Association, in partnership with the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), is proactively approaching a nation-wide initiative which will see more kids at younger ages playing and practicing hockey in age-appropriate programming.

Starting in the 2019-2020 season, Hockey Canada has mandated players 8-years-old and under will participate in modified-ice games, which includes cross-ice or half-ice. To continue the player progression for young athletes already in modified-ice programming, the OHF will expand its modified-ice programming in 2018-2019 season and advance 2011-born players from cross-ice to half-ice games. The focus in practices will remain station-based.

In 2019-2020, as per the Hockey Canada modified-ice mandate, those same players start the season playing half-ice games and end it with full-ice games.

Q: Will WMHA be implementing this programming?

A: Yes WMHA currently offers Cross ice/modified ice for 7 year olds and below and will adopt the Novice programming policies from Hockey Canada.

Q: Does my child have to participate in this format?

A: Yes this is a mandatory policy from our governing bodies; WMHA will not offer any programming that is not endorsed by Hockey Canada and our other governing bodies.

Q: What is DS Stream?

A: DS stream is a rep initiation programming that promotes skill development and excelling in the framework of Hockey Canada's modified ice programming. DS Stream players will be eligible to play other OMHA centres in exhibition games and jamborees. Novice teams will at some point be eligible to participate in League play against other OMHA Centre’s, all DS Streams will receive development from Edge Hockey our Rep development group.

Q: How many games/practices will DS Stream and Novice teams have?

A: TBD. The OMHA will provide the amount of practices/games each level when final program changes are announced.

Q. How are the coaches selected?

A: All DS and Novice coaches will be selected by the Head of Player Development (Edge Hockey) The Rep Committee and our Development Director and the GM of WMHA.

Q: Will there be tryouts for each level?

A: Yes Novice and DS 6 & 7 will have their own tryout dates, formats are TBD as we are waiting finalization of the programming for next year from the OMHA.

Q: How are the players for Novice and DS 6 & 7 selected?

A: There will be a selection panel for each Level. The Head of Player Development (Edge Hockey) Will Chair the Panel, the Panel will also have members of the Rep Committee and the successful coaches for each team.

Q: Will WMHA consider changes to the programming?

A: WMHA will periodically meet with coaches to consider changes to programming; all proposed changes would have to meet the regulations of Hockey Canada.
